On peut certes affirmer qu’il y a péril en la demeure. Les scientifiques ont raison de s’inquiéter de la façon dont Trump composera avec la science en matière d’environnement, de santé, d’éducation, d’immigration, etc.
Pour ma part, la disparition du monde mécanique infernal que nous avons créé ne me dérangerait pas du tout.

Climate-change and immigration policies raise alarm, but much of the incoming US president's agenda is simply unknown.
Trump’s first target will likely be the Clean Power Plan, Obama’s set of regulations to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions from power plants, which roughly two dozen states are challenging in court. The case is expected to reach the Supreme Court as early as next year. By then, Trump may have filled the court’s current vacancy, tipping the panel’s ideological balance towards the conservative. That would put the climate regulations in jeopardy.
But it would be easy enough for the Trump administration to just revoke the Clean Power Plan on its own, Holmstead says. The administration could also revise a regulation that essentially bans the construction of new coal-fired power plants unless they are equipped to capture and bury a portion of their carbon emissions. And Trump could repeal the moratorium on new federal coal leases with the stroke of a pen.

Burning the Future: Coal in America
Les mines de charbon qui avaient été fermées ces dernières années vont sûrement rouvrir. En Virginie-Occidentale l’industrie minière redémarrera à fond la caisse sous l’administration Trump – dig deeper... À cause de la décapitation des montagnes dans cette région des Appalaches, les vallées sont régulièrement inondées. Les coulées de boues de charbon envahissent les cours d’eau, rendant les sources totalement impropres à la consommation – les gens développent des maladies cutanées, des cancers, des problèmes neurologiques, etc. C’est épouvantable, triste et révoltant. Les industriels organisent des rallies pro-charbon et leur propagande est simple : vous ne pouvez pas avoir d’électricité, faire fonctionner votre brosse à dents électrique et tous vos gadgets électroniques, sans charbon. Joe Manshin III (un démocrate!) remercie Dieu pour ce cadeau du ciel, tout comme le faisait Steven Harper pour les sables bitumineux en Alberta. Malheureusement ces cadeaux empoisonnés – qui viennent non pas de Dieu mais des hommes – tuent beaucoup de monde et d’animaux.
Pourtant le virage aux panneaux solaires est faisable, avec le même argent qui en ce moment fait de la terre un dépotoir toxique.

Le documentaire Burning the Future expose au grand jour les désastres environnementaux et sociaux dus à l'exploitation du charbon, plus particulièrement en Virginie-Occidentale (É.-U.). Les montagnes ont été décapitées et dépouillées de 1,4 millions d'acres de forêts, l'eau contaminée, et les terres agricoles et les communautés détruites. Le film suit un groupe de personnes directement touchées qui osent s’opposer à l'industrie du charbon afin de protéger les montagnes, sauver leurs familles et préserver la vie. Cependant, leurs efforts sont entravés par des systèmes qui protègent les intérêts de l’industrie minière et ses magnats à Washington. Ce film montre l'impérieuse nécessité de lutter contre ces puissants industriels, et aussi à quel point les moyens légaux pour persuader et réformer n'existent tout simplement pas. However, their efforts are hampered by the systems that protect coal interests, the interests of business and industrial civilisation. This film shows the imperative need to fight back against powerful mining magnates, and how common legal channels of persuasion and reform simply do not exist. How do we stop these massive mining magnates from killing the world we live in?

Mountaintop removal mining devastates the landscape, turning areas that should be lush with forests and wildlife into barren moonscapes. Huge machines, called “draglines,” push rock and dirt into nearby streams and valleys, forever burying waterways. The massive dragline in the photo, which can weigh up to 12 million pounds and be as big as an entire city block, is dwarfed by the scale of this devastation. (Earth Justice)
In the past few decades, an area the size of Delaware has been flattened. Coal companies first raze an entire mountainside, ripping trees from the ground and clearing brush with huge tractors. This debris is then set ablaze as deep holes are dug for explosives. Explosive is poured into these holes and mountaintops are literally blown apart. As much as 800 to 1,000 feet are blasted off the tops of mountains in order to reach thin coal seams buried deep below. (Earth Justice)
