un prêtre catholique, a été acquitté après qu’il ait avoué avoir violé près de 30 jeunes filles âgées de 5 à 10 ans. Aucune charge n’a été retenue contre
lui, malgré le fait qu’il savait qu’il
avait le virus du SIDA quand il a mis la main sur ces enfants.

...Ce
rapport est écœurant. Au cours de cette enquête, le grand jury a découvert un
cercle de prêtres prédateurs opérant dans le diocèse [de Pittsburgh] qui partageaient
des renseignements ou des informations sur leurs victimes. Ils s’échangeaient les
victimes entre eux pour créer de la pornographie juvénile... [et] ils usaient
de fouets, de sévices corporels et de sadisme lors des viols. Selon le
procureur général de la Pennsylvanie, Josh Shapiro, un garçon nommé George, «fut
forcé de se tenir debout sur un lit dans un presbytère, de se déshabiller et de
poser comme le Christ en croix pour les prêtres. Ils prirent des photos de leur
victime, et l’ajoutèrent à leur collection de pornographie juvénile produite et
partagée sur le réseau de l’église».
Comme disait mon bien-aimé Mark Twain : «Quand vous êtes en colère, comptez
jusqu'à quatre; quand vous êtes très en colère, jurez. Dans certaines
circonstances, des circonstances urgentes, des circonstances désespérées, le
blasphème procure un soulagement que même la prière ne peut offrir.»

L’Église
catholique a choisi de protéger son statut et sa réputation au lieu de protéger
les droits des enfants. L’histoire des orphelins de Duplessis en est un
exemple : les communautés religieuses ont choisi l’argent au lieu des
enfants – en déplaçant les orphelins sains d’esprit en institut
psychiatrique, elles n’avaient plus à les instruire. Et, au lieu de recevoir 0,70
$ par orphelin par jour, la congrégation recevait 2,25 $. Selon un calcul
approximatif, entre 1940 et 1960, le transfert aurait rapporté aux communautés un
revenu additionnel de 70 millions de dollars, en dollars d’aujourd’hui (un
minimum). D’après les témoignages de survivants, au Mont-Providence, les sévices
corporels, les agressions sexuelles, la sodomie... étaient choses courantes. Terrorisés
par les menaces de représailles des religieux, les enfants se taisaient. Pour
recevoir des indemnités compensatoires, les orphelins ont dû signer une
quittance de non-poursuite. Les orphelins des écoles de réforme comme Huberdeau
ont subi les mêmes sévices sans recevoir de compensation parce qu’ils n’étaient
pas allés en institut psychiatrie. L’Église a toujours refusé d’admettre la culpabilité
des communautés religieuses. L’ex premier ministre péquiste Bernard Landry les a
même défendues car selon lui elles n’avaient fait que du bien. (!!)
Synopsis : Sous le règne de Duplessis,
des enfants illégitimes sont étiquetés comme malades mentaux et internés dans
des asiles. Ces «enfants du péché»
sont victimes d'une manœuvre du gouvernement Duplessis afin d'obtenir des
subventions fédérales. Inconscients des tractations qui s'opèrent dans le noir,
ils continuent à subsister de leur mieux sans se douter que leur destin et
celui de leurs amis est scellé par des manigances politiques... Au début des
années 1990, les orphelins se mobilisent et réclament justice et réparation.
Ils mènent un combat inégal pour sortir de l'amnésie collective qu'a longtemps
entretenu la société québécoise à leur égard. Ils veulent enfin sortir de
l'anonymat, de la honte...

jours-ci, le monde tangue sous le choc d’un nouveau scandale de pédophilie qui,
en Pennsylvanie cette fois, vient «éclabousser» l’Église catholique : sur une
période de 70 ans, 1000 enfants abusés ou violés par des prêtres, et, compte
tenu de la célérité des intéressés à escamoter les preuves et de la honte des
victimes à témoigner, l’on peut être certain que ce chiffre est encore
inférieur à la vérité.

mettait à la disposition des enfants du monde entier un site Internet où ils
pourraient déposer leur plainte en toute sécurité, ce «balancetonpretre»
provoquerait un tsunami mondial qui, par sa violence et son volume, dépasserait
à coup sûr celui de «balancetonporc». Seraient encore reléguées au silence, il
est vrai, les nombreuses victimes qui, en raison de leur jeune âge (18 mois,
exemple entendu ce matin) ou de leur misère (enfants du Tiers-Monde, illettrés
et/ou non connectés), n’auraient pas accès au site.

Ils ont peur
Pourquoi
s’en prennent-ils de façon si prépondérante aux enfants et aux adolescents? Non
parce qu’ils sont pédophiles – la proportion de vrais pédophiles parmi les
prêtres est sûrement aussi minuscule que dans la population générale – mais
parce qu’ils ont peur, et que les plus jeunes sont les plus faibles, les plus
vulnérables, les plus faciles à intimider, les moins aptes donc à les dénoncer.

foulée de l’enquête sur les prêtres des diocèses de la
Pennsylvanie, j’ai revu le film Spotlight
(2016); le parallèle avec l’enquête du procureur Josh Shapiro est criant.
Synopsis : Adapté de faits réels,
Spotlight retrace la fascinante enquête du Boston Globe (en 2002) – couronnée
par le prix Pulitzer – qui a mis au jour un scandale sans précédent au sein de
l’Église catholique. Une équipe de journalistes d’investigation, baptisée
Spotlight, a enquêté pendant 12 mois sur des suspicions d’abus sexuels au sein
d’une des institutions les plus anciennes et les plus respectées au monde.
L’enquête révélera que l’Église catholique a protégé pendant des décennies les
personnalités religieuses, juridiques et politiques les plus en vue de Boston,
et déclenchera par la suite une vague de révélations dans le monde entier.

Her declaration back in 1992 that the Catholic Church
was rotten to its core and pedophile priests and their enablers were the real
enemy was true.
It caused a
massive worldwide reaction when she tore up a picture of the then Pope on
Saturday Night Live in October 1992 and declared, “Fight the real enemy.”
Before Spotlight, before the worst of the American and
Irish church scandals, O'Connor called it right and only got abuse in return.
The enemy has
become very obvious since then. [...] We now know that the pedophile scandals
were rampant during the era of Pope John Paul, who chose to turn a blind eye.
O’Connor was calling out the right person.
Imagine if
300 imams were named as sex abusers of children. The Muslim religion would
likely be banned and the imams driven out or jailed.
There is no
reason to believe that Pennsylvania is an outrider and that similar scandals
were not omnipresent in other dioceses.
The report is
sickening. “During the course of this investigation, the Grand Jury uncovered a
ring of predatory priests operating within the [Pittsburgh] Diocese who shared
intelligence or information regarding victims as well as exchanging the victims
amongst themselves. This ring also manufactured child pornography ... [and]
used whips, violence and sadism in raping their victims.”
According to
Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro, a boy named George, “was forced to
stand on a bed in a rectory, strip naked and pose as Christ on the cross for
the priests. They took photos of their victim, adding them to a collection of
child pornography which they produced and shared on church grounds.”

Blame the gays. That appears to be the strategy of
Bishop Robert Morlino of the Diocese of Madison, who penned a letter to his
flock. “Until recently, the problems of the church have been painted purely as
problems of pedophilia, this despite clear evidence to the contrary,” wrote
Morlino, essentially arguing that homosexuality, not priests preying on
children, was the problem: “There is a homosexual subculture within the
hierarchy of the Catholic Church that is wreaking great devastation in the
vineyard of the Lord.”
This is a
disgusting attempt to paint LGBTQ Americans, who have made great strides toward
acceptance and equality despite the best efforts of the Catholic Church, as
“disordered,” “deviant,” and “in violation of the natural moral law.” As the
tidal wave of this scandal again crashes down on his church, Morlino is trying
to shift the blame.
Morlino is
wrong. There is not now, nor has there ever been, a link between homosexuality
and pedophilia. This myth, bred of ignorance, has been debunked countless
times. For those of us who dwell in the world of facts and reality, the
research is clear: Most sexual abuse is committed by heterosexual males.
Worse,
Morlino’s callous ignorance makes it that much more difficult to fix the real
problem: the Catholic Church.
The reason
the child sexual abuse problem is so rampant and seemingly ineradicable is the
church itself. The power structure of the church is predicated on an
unquestionable, unassailable authority — a divine authority. Under Catholic
Canon law, adherents are required to give a “religious submission of the
intellect and will” to their church.
And the
church uses that power to suppress questions, doubts, and dissent. It has for
millennia. Without religion, would anyone argue that three is really one or one
is really three, or that crackers turn to flesh if a few magic words are
uttered over them?
A group of
fallible, celibate men have nearly unlimited power over a community of people who
have been drilled toward credulity their whole lives. This is a recipe not only
for abuse, but for covering up that abuse.

Cardinal: Pedophile Priests’ Victims Should Think About Their Own Flaws

Given the magnitude of the Catholic Church sex abuse
scandal, you’d think Church leaders would be better at responding to the
outrage. Say you’re sorry, say you’re working to make the Church more
transparent, say that you’ll cooperate with law enforcement whenever there’s an
accusation of wrongdoing in the future, etc.
Mexican Cardinal Sergio Obeso Rivera didn’t get
that memo because his reaction was to blame the victims for speaking out.
Even though
he acknowledged that some allegations are true, he went after the victims and
avoided referring to the Pennsylvania grand jury report in the United States
that found some 300 abusive priests in a span of seven decades in six dioceses.
Obeso
Rivera’s words came last week, after the report was made public.
“I’m here
happy to talk about nice things, not about problematic things, it’s an
accusation that is made, and in some cases it’s true. But the evil of many is the consolation of fools, because sometimes
those who accuse men of the Church should [be careful] because they have long
tails that are easily stepped on.”

Catholic League president Bill Donohue defends
predatory priests by claiming it’s not rape if the child isn’t penetrated.
In a bizarre,
insensitive, and outrageous post, Bill Donohue, president of the very
conservative Catholic League, attacked the recent grand jury report documenting
the rape and sexual abuse in Pennsylvania.
Donohue
called the report released by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court an “obscene lie”
while defending the Catholic Church and their deplorable record of covering up
and enabling the rape and sexual abuse of children by predatory priests.
At one point
in the deplorable post Donohue has the audacity to claim that the statement
“the priests raped their victims” is actually a “myth,” writing:
Myth: The
priests “raped” their victims.
Attempting
to justify his assertion that the claim that “the priests raped their victims”
is a “myth,” Donohue writes:
Fact: This is an obscene lie. Most of the alleged
victims were not raped: they were groped or otherwise abused, but not
penetrated, which is what the word “rape” means.

Report:
New York Catholic Church Spent Over $2M Protecting Predator Priests

Bad Catholics: An exclusive report from the New York Daily News explains: The
Catholic Conference… spent more than $2.1 million on lobbying from 2007 through
the end of 2015, state records show. Filings show the lobbyists were retained,
in part, to work on issues associated with “statute of limitations” and
“timelines for commencing certain civil actions related to sex…
According to
the report, the money is being used to “block legislation that would eliminate
the statute of limitations on child sex abuse civil cases and open a one-year
window to bring lawsuits for victims who can no longer sue under current law.”
The report notes that the person
responsible for the effort to deny justice to the victims of rape and sexual
assault by predator priests is headed by Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the current
Archbishop of New York.
Remember, if you support the Catholic Church, you
support the rape and sexual assault of children.
